Interesting personal policy.
I do not pay the Mafia every three years as a routine.
It is only when you can not use the latest iOS that you are forced to pay.
I will replace my iPhone 6 this year.
It was bought in January 2015 so ransom is getting paid after 5 years only.

Smartphones have become a necessity, and the need will only intensify.
I dislike the cheap, greedy thing that Apple's become, but that's life.
Every three years seems reasonable. Once you can no longer upgrade your operating system, it's time to pay the Mafia.
