If I had an iPhone 5 I would update to the pro too but I have an xs max and the phone is really good

I'd guess it depends mostly on what iPhone you have now. As you say, if you have a pretty recent model, it's probably not worth it. I have an iPhone 5, so it's well past upgrade time :-). I'm looking at an iPhone 11 Pro, probably 256G but may decide to splurge for 512G. I want to see them in person first though so won't be ordering anything until I get to an Apple store.
