If your iPhone does everything that you need (or even want), why do you need to have the latest Operating System?

Smartphones have become a necessity, and the need will only intensify.
I dislike the cheap, greedy thing that Apple's become, but that's life.
Every three years seems reasonable. Once you can no longer upgrade your operating system, it's time to pay the Mafia.
