For me, some apps close when I lock my iPhone, like my gaming & music apps.  Others like email & youtube are on the screen when I unlock my phone.

I shall get very cross if Apple change this. I am sure it is deliberate. The Lock Mode turns the display off, not the iphone (the display is the big power user). When I go into Lock Mode, I expect to get back exactly what I had before. If you want to exit an app then exit the app.
