I never said any money from the purchase went to the carrier. What I did say was that the carrier pays a subsidy if you sign a contract.
I have been with AT&T since 2005. There was no advantage to buy and bring a unlocked phone to AT&T, since you would pay more for the phone.
They (Apple) do not charge differently for iPhones with (or without) any particular SIM, and they are ALL sold unlocked (at least with the iPhone Upgrade Program).
