I too have the unlimited data plan with AT&T. For the first time last month, I exceeded 2g's of data usage. I am usually just shy of 1G monthly. I received a threatening text message from AT&T stating that I am now considered in the top 5% of excessive data users and if I exceed 2g's again, they will limit the speed at which I download data. They advised that I downgrade to the 2G plan and then pay for additional if I exceed so that the speed at which I download will not be affected. This sounds like extortion to me! What's the point of unlimited if you can't use it? And I really don't appreciate being threatened like that, especially it being the one and only time I've even come close to 2g's for any given month. Like stated below, they have gotten plenty of money from me due to the fact that I rarely exceed 1g monthly.
I've considered going to Verizon, but I was told they too wil threaten if 2g is approached. They should upgrade the equipment to handle smart devices!

I do the same thing, Alice. I'm grandfathered in to the Unlimited ATT plan. At this point I use 3G data very little on my iPhone, so they're making plenty of $$ on me. I've considered downgrading to 200MB/month to save $15/month. But when we do travel, we use the MapQuest navigation app a lot. And I know that eats up data time. A dilemma.
