I got mine free when my subdivision was designated as poor reception area. The interesting thing - it took three months for the thing to activate! We had it in a good signal area, etc. - it just wouldn't activate. I guess they were backed up or something. The phone now says "ATT Mcell" in the upper left. No disconnecting at night with IOS 5.0 or 5.0.1. I don't know what your problem was, maybe firmware in the microcell combined with IOS 5. My microcell is newer.
Some other notes - what pre-wired house actually has an ethernet port near a window for the GPS satellites? Not mine. My microcell is in the closet with the ethernet wiring. It works - it even says it has GPS lock but I doubt it.
There is an antenna port on the side. No antenna supplied. I took a large paper clip, straightened it out, bent the end 90 degrees, shoved it in - works great! Approximately the right length. I can't verify if there were more bars, but maybe the beer can reflector trick will give me some.
One thing I notice about a micro cell - the calls take longer to connect. Sometimes over a minute, I just have to be patient. UGH! I wish they would fix it, though.
