It sort of is free. If say, you wanted a large plan, as you needs lots of call, text, data. If that plan is large enough to give you a free phone, then it is free.
Or, if you didnt need that large a plan, you should see it as a saving and time payment

This is a weird thing with the mobile/cell phone market. People pay large
amounts on a monthly contract over 12/18/24 months and somehow think the
phone is free.
