For me the reasons to get an iPhone were 1) to access the internet while
I'm out 2) to replace a 20 GB iPod.

Unless you have Wi-Fi available, internet access is unusable without 3G,
and I had to wait for the 3GS to get storage that wasn't smaller than my
iPod. This turned out well because the 3GS can still run the latest iOS and
I think will run iOS 6 as well. The 5 might be the first one to tempt me
since then.
