The only carrier options here are AT&T (which is what we have) and Verizon, whose coverage is terrible.

I have been debating taking it back if there might be a smartphone that has better signal pickup.

AT&Ts 3G (4G?) network is poor here, I assume it is their backbone. We only get about 1 mb/s speed here. (The only other Internet option is satellite, which we dropped.)
