The only way my iPhone 6s would display the behavior you describe is if the Bookmark icon is active (highlighted blue). You might have to gently pull down on the right side of the screen to see the tool bar where the address bar and Bookmark icon are located.

There is no Bookmark icon to the left of an address bar Pat. I'm experiencing this on an iPhone. Maybe it's different on an iPad.
