Not necessarily.
I often plug mine into my laptop as I sit at it in the evening. The screen turns on when I plug it in, and in a couple of minutes turns off again.


That the part I where I said they all do, but you cropped the part I was replying to, "However, the phone lights up periodically which is a distraction. Is this normal?"



There are some apps which will keep the screen lit as long as they are running, but they are supposed to ask you if they can over-ride the default screen-off timing.


Since I did not know if she charged it while listening to music at night, I included the second part.

I asked an Apple Genius, why rather than the screen eventually going black while playing audio books, it would stay lit, he said it because I had it plugged in to charge.
