It might be uncommon for you, Jim, but for many others, it is not an uncommon issue.
For those who it is a frequent issue, it is easier to use a battery case, and not have to carry around two other items, a cable and a separate battery. That usually also requires a place to lay them down, but as Anne explained, she needed the phone near her at those times.
I also think it is silly for people to charge their smart phones from their employers computers, because the cables transfer more than just power. They allow data transfer, and so they have just given up their right to privacy on their smart phone. In fact, on my last job, that was brought to the attention of a co-worker, that every time he charged his phone off the company computer, the network scanned his phone's contents. In that setting, it is easy to charge from a small charger and cable.

Anne You didn't, and don't, but unlike some, you have actually thought it through. My solution for the UNCOMMON occasion when I will need more battery, away from AC or car power, is a separate battery pack, that I can connect to my iPhone with a standard cable.
