Carol,
Once you have imported the CD you are correct in that the music is now in your iTunes. When you plug your phone in and the screen showin your phone in iTunes comes up you need to click on music, find the artist and drag it to your phone (you may be able to just check the box next to their name) than hit sync and the music will be transferred to your phone.
