I've had this problem with one cable for years and it still works.
The reason this one cord is a problem. I picked up the phone not realizing it was still plugged in and had it pulled from my hand. In my case it is a mini-USB cable.
Many 3rd party lightening cables are known to go bad after a time.
I think Richard means dirty as in pocket lint, not corrosion on the contacts.
