It isn't random, if you hold down the home button and press sleep/lock it
always takes a screen shot but it shouldn't lock up.... I would force quit
all apps (double press home so running apps show up, tap and hold until
shake then X out all of them) then do a complete shut down (hold sleep/lock
until slide to power off comes up then slide off) wait a couple min before
turning back on.
