[apple-iphone] Re: tranferring data from iphone to new computer

I am a real computer dummy. I have an iCloud account. I connected my iPhone to the computer, and clicked "backup to iCloud." The system didn't ask for my iCloud log-in information. It indicated it was backing it up, but the date information indicates "last backed up to iCloud unknown.' I looked at my iCloud account, where I have "find my phone" set up, but I can't see any backup. I also backed up to the ocmputer, and found it, but I don't know how to transfer that data to the computer so that it syncs the information I want to keep with the iPhone.
this one-way-syncing process is really annoying. The old-fashioned Palm Pilots let you syn either to or from computer and change that setting. I am not mourning the loss of my constantly-crashing Palm Pilot but I did like that feature.
thanks for any help you can provide.
