I'm in a WhatsApp group that has both iOS and Android users. I see that, contrary to what I said before, iMessage does do groups, but anyone outside the Apple "ecosystem" will receive normal SMS texts and not see other responses from the group. I see no way around that until there's an "iMessage" for Android, and even then you would have to persuade  Android users to use it (there are many Apple-haters out there!).

If I had my way, I wouldn't use anything but iMessage. It comes on appl iPhones. WhatsApp has to be downloaded and really isn't intuitive. Also, there isn't a version for iPad or Mac. I use it because it's the only way my friends will text back.
