My reference to the native app I use just means the one that came installed on your phone. It is a green icon with a white text bubble in the center of it and says "Messages" under it. Here's a site that will show you a picture of it on the list at the left side of the page:

I have upgraded to iPhone 6 plus. On my other phone if I got a message from messenger, a little bubble would always pop up and a sound was made. Now, that little bubble does not come up and there is no sound. I downloaded the Messenger App and if I have a message, there is not even a number on it.
