Re: [apple-iphone] upgrading iphone 4/att next

Well, I don't believe they are selling unlocked AT&T phones, but you could call AT&T and ask them.

I bought it direct from Apple. It was the first time I stayed up late for the launch and ordered it shortly after midnight. One of the first I imagine. There was no mention of it being locked or unlocked - it was just an AT&T phone...

If you bought it from Apple as an unlocked phone, then it is unlocked.

Only the carrier that it was bought from can unlock the iPhone without hacking the iPhone. Who did you buy it from? Apple, a carrier, a store, or a private individual?

Before going through the request for unlock procedure, it says to ensure the device is not already unlocked. How does one determine if the phone is already unlocked? I purchased my iPhone 5 outright when I upgraded from my iPhone 3, so it was never subsidised.
Thanks.

It may be silly but that's why I'm holding onto my iPhone 5 when I upgrade instead of selling it. I use it when we go on a cruise.  My contract with the 5 will be up in November. Since the phone was paid for in full & my account is in good standing, I was able to request AT&T to unlock my 5.  This process only took a few days.  I then was able to use it on Tmobile with their sim card for our cruise to Bermuda. The phone worked perfectly.

Here's the link to start the unlock process with AT&T -  https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/

I plan to activate the phone with Tmobile again for our cruise to Canada in a few weeks. The unlimited data &  text internationally for $50 plus tax was a no brainer. Once we got back all I had to do was called Tmobile to cancel the account. I highly recommend this to save on ridiculous roaming fees when traveling.

Doesn't seem like you can buy an unsubsidized phone for AT&T at least on Apple Web site.  I was thinking of doing that so I have an unlocked iPhone that I can swap SIMs to when I travel overseas.

It looks like the only way to do this is to buy the T-mobile phone and then put an AT&T sim in it.

Anyone know how to do differently?

Thanks

I recently saw the information on the AT&T website about "next". Is this like the Sprint rental program where by you pay a certain amount you get free everything and then when a new phone comes out you turn in your old you get the new phone? I was unsure about the cost of this at ATT. Does anyone here in the group deal with this plan costs? The plan at Sprint seems inexpensive or maybe less so for two people or one person, but on other hand if you're supporting more than two phones it is best to stay with the regular programis just as well to stay with the regular program.
