As I understand it, if you buy an iPhone from Apple in the USA, you can choose between:-
A 2-year contract with AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon (which means the phone is locked to one of those carriers);
or
Contract-free with a T-Mobile SIM (which is the only way to buy it unlocked).
