My point of view is that for something like a new iPhone, that is expensive, and that is taken out and handled scores of times every day, I want a VERY protective case. Which means that except for a little patch around the camera and flash, the back and sides will never be visible.
So I chose my phone on the basis of *front* appearance.
I have it in a G-form protective case. They have interesting videos of it protecting an iPhone: a guy doing 80+ mph slap-shots with encased phones in a hockey rink, dropping it from high enough to reach terminal velocity.
With their zip-up iPad case, they show a 12-pound bowling ball being dropped on the screen side from 3-4 feet. No damage.
