I agree with David Smith. Verizon's least expensive smartphone plan is $80/mo, with 300MB of data.
There's always taxes and fees that they add. Assume that they are 10%, or $8/mo. The contract is for 2 years, so over the life of the contract, just for the service, not including the phone, you will pay 24 x $88 = $2112.
Two years and $2112. is a lot of time and money to use a phone that you're not satisfied with. Get the phone you like.
Additionally, once you get some experience with your smartphone, you're not going to be satisfied with 300MB of data/mo. You might be spending $110/mo for the service with a reasonable amount of data. That ups your contract price to 24 x $110 = $2640.
Get the phone you want, not the phone you'll regret.

I have the iPhone 4S with 64GB, and I'm very satisfied with it.
