Because we all use our iPhones differently, we all have different requirements. If the less expensive machine fulfills your needs, then that's the one to get, and you'd regret getting the more expensive machine.

I had the 32GB 3GS, and it's a very nice machine. When I was able to get the 4S, I bought it for the better camera, and the larger storage. I have a navigator that has the entire map of the USA in the machine, and that takes about 1.5 GB by itself. I have user manuals for my TV and my GF's TV; etc. I have something like 2,500 songs; hundreds of photos, and much else.

I think that the way one uses their computer might be a guide to what iPhone they should buy. My iMac has a 1TB drive, with 685GB used. I also have 12GB of RAM installed. So that pointed me in the direction of a large storage capacity for my iPhone. On the other hand, I send/receive a handful of texts per year, so I don't have a "text plan", which might be important for others.
