Thanks for the input Brent. It's the default clock app I use for the alarms. I don't usually dock or plug in my phone overnight and most of the third-party apps, some of which look pretty decent, tend to be battery drainers as well. So default app works well enough for me.
And by notifications blocking the view, here's what I mean: Say I have a news app that will send notifications of big stories. If it does so during my sleep time, that notification will be on the lock screen when I activate the phone. But for some reason these notifications hierarchically seem to be more important than the snooze button on the alarm. Thus when the alarm goes off the snooze button is behind the notification. Behind it means the button can't be pressed so you have to unlock the phone screen to shut the alarm off, thus no more snooze. That's one of the problems I have with the alarm. The other is that the snooze button is just so small to begin with, even without a notification covering it. Hence my opinion that it is a design (looks more than general usability) flaw.
Perhaps I should look closer at a third-party alarm app to see if some of these issues are addressed. And maybe get another cable to plug it in at night.

Has anyone found a way to make the snooze button more prominent, perhaps being the top-most level on the lock screen? To me it is one of the biggest design failures with the iOS.
