[apple-iphone] Earbuds don’t work

 

I have an iPhone 5 and recently the earbuds stopped working. 

Now I have an 8 and the new earbuds do not work on the 8 or the 5, brand new earbuds. 

Is there a setting I need to change in both my phones?
