Hi Cyndi - it is both WiFi and cellular although I haven't activated the cellular. That may be it. The X may switch from one to the other and disconnect. A good possibility. I may try the vpn on my husbands 6s+ and see if that is it. 

Although at home strictly on WiFi it still disconnects unpredictably.

I did post a few days ago but presumed no one had a solution for me. I do have a support question into open vpn about my problem. The vpn connection keeps dropping on my iphoneX but never does on my iPad Pro.

And I absolutely hate the fact that the vpn icon indicating a proper connection is hidden in control center. It should be up and exposed in the upper right corner. I am never sure I am still connected so I have to repeatedly invoke control center to check. What idiot at Apple thought that was good should be chastised. I did give feedback to Apple as well. A function as important as connection to a vpn should be visible at all times.
