The X has a different aspect ratio, that is why the screen difference. The VPN icon
is not shown due to the "notch". 99.999999% of people will not notice it missing that is
probably why the did it this way. A few things changed on the X, but most due to
things the majority will not need.

H Alice - yes it is narrower. On my 6splus the actual screen width is 7 cm. On my iPhone X the width is 6.3 cm. The real estate area is larger but the width is smaller height is longer.

Sue, narrowness of the screen? I thought the iPhone X screen was as big (or a bit bigger) as the iPhone 8 Plus. I've always thought that with each iteration of the iPhone, the screen got more narrow. I really like the iPad mini screen dimentions, 4:3. I can then the iPad mini landscape and not have the keyboard taking up most of the screen like on the iPhone.

Rich I really like the X. The gestures are more natural for doing things. Also the faceid works quickly. So getting into a bank app, using Apple Pay, or accessing a password manager is so lightening. The only downsides I see are my personal issue with the vpn icon not being visible constantly and the narrowness of the screen takes getting used to.
Apps updated for the extra screen space are really designed well and functionally great.
And the screen is so crystal.

One of the guys talking seems to have been right many times in the past, so in 2018 there"could be" 3 new iPhones. One just like the X, one larger maybe X+ and a cheaper more
limited feature iPhone but still looking similar.
There is still a rumor about another 4" SE iPhone, but I heard a lot of mixed things on that.
Are people happy about this direction with the fancy screen and not the iconic home buttoniPhone look? I am curious as I been talking to a few people and a lot of different thoughts.
