I didn't want to leave the group hanging on this issue. I think I fixed it!
When upgrading, believe it or not, when it is finished - you need to do a reset. Apparently IOS isn't like Windows, you can't assume that the IOS upgrade reset the phone. One reset, and battery life seems similar to before on IOS 8. The verdict is still out on whether it is better, just similar. Yesterday's "butt dial" activating the camera drained 25% before I discovered it (the phone was getting warm). Ignoring that user error, life seems decent.
