You can go back to the 4 digit. 

Settings ➡️ Passcode ➡️ Change Passcode ➡️ "enter your old passcode " ➡️ then touch "passcode options " in light blue. 

That will give you 3 options:

Custom alphanumeric code

Custom numeric code

6-digit code

Choose custom numeric

That worked for me

Apple now requires a 6 number passcode. Bring back the four. My passcode was not an easy to remember set of numbers, but a meaningful to me pattern on the keyboard. Six destroys my pattern. Sent from my iPad John Ferman Minneapolis, MN
