This is not true for an iPhone 6S Plus.

I only get the option to use alphanumeric, not custom numberic.

You can go back to the 4 digit.

Settings ➡️ Passcode ➡️ Change Passcode ➡️ "enter your old passcode " ➡️ then touch "passcode options " in light blue.

That will give you 3 options:
Custom alphanumeric code
Custom numeric code
6-digit code

Choose custom numeric

That worked for me
