I do not think that text to speech works except for a true kindle. You might consider getting her one, I know from another list of blind people who use one. I heard recently that it will even read the menu to you. I believe that is the Kindle Keyboard, not the touch or other models, but am not sure. You could call kindle service and ask, though.
