Another suggestion:

You could also go to the group KindleKorner for more info/tips/experience
with various models of Kindle (and more leads to free books & sources).

Audiobooks are, of course, easy to put on the phone; if they're only
availalbe in CD form, they can be ripped to MP3 easily enough. Even
convertible from cassette, but that's more trouble -- but for something
really wanted & only available that way it makes a nice gift -- the book
already converted! i.e. not just the item but the labor & extra effort.
