You didn't think it through. Cell phones get their time over the cellular service. Part of it is used to set the time, part for billing and part for GPS locations.
iPods don't use cellular service, don't need billing information, and don't include GPS abilities. If you have a vehicle that does not have built in GPS, I'll bet it does not automatically set the time, either.
