I keep my iTunes library on an external drive and have iTunes point to it. That way, any new iPhone I get, I can sync with no problem. Also, regular syncs and backups of your computer is a good thing. That way if your computer should crash or you get a new one, you can put your stuff back on your computer the way it was.
