Re: [apple-iphone] iPhone security question

If that is true about not being able to lunch Apps with Siri, then something is wrong with my 4 IOS devices running the latest IOS 11. My friend summoned "Hey Siri get mail" and my mail opened. Too late tonight for me to turn "Hey Siri" back on and double test. I will test it again once I have the energy and time to set up Siri again and start over. I am now wondering if my devices needed another restart after the updates. I was testing from the brand new update. I will report back when I do a restart and test Siri again.

Some things can be accessed with Hey Siri but no apps can be launched. This is an answer from Apple

Just a note, you cannot launch apps even the Access on Lock Screen is enabled.

Below are the options that can be accessed when locked

Home control might be a security issue. Privacy with notification and messaging.

It all depends on how paranoid one is and how determined a hacker is I guess.

HI Cyndi - For sure Hey Siri is a security concern.  As is Alexa and all the other voice activated helpers.  Until they can do voice identification anyone can ask for almost anything through them.  I have this link to security settings on an iphone using ios 10.  11 is similar.  HTH

I never thought of this until now. While jumping the hoops of setting up the new phone, adding new IOS upgrades and the new Apple Pay Cash, I got to thinking about "Hey Siri" and wondering how secure it was. I did a test and asked a friend to say "Hey, Siri" and sure enough she summoned Siri on my phone. I went to a quiet room and re-set my voice in Siri and had her do it again. The first two tries didn't work but, the third time was a charm. That made me feel really uncomfortable. I had my friend ask Siri to open my mail, it worked. YIKES. I did the same testing on my three iPads. They all allowed access into my mail. So I went into all of my IOS devices and turned of "Hey Siri" and Allow Siri When Locked. That makes me much more comfortable if someone happens to get the idea of stealing a device but, I am left with lingering doubt and paranoia.

I don't care if someone reads my mail, my concern was if there was sensitive info in my mail like credit card info or any info that would allow someone to order until their hearts content on Amazon. I just didn't want to make it easy for anyone regarding my CC or banking, etc.

With that said, when I do have Siri open my mail, I notice in the top left corner says, "Siri". If I press the home button on the iPad, it goes back home, a double click shows the mail app open and I can tap it to bring it forward again. I think my point here is that what I observed is frightening and I wanted to share my Aha moment with those who didn't realize anyone can get into your mail (I didn't check out other apps yet.) if you keep "Hey Siri" on. I am wondering what else I am missing regarding safety/privacy.
