Apart from the answers on the device scanning for connections (wifi,
3G, whatever), you may also want to limit the traffic once you /are/
connected.
You won't be interested in AppsGoneFree or even updates when you are
concerned about recharching, and you'll definitely not appreciate
banner ads in free apps, reminders of apps like Your Ideal Weight, or
the lovely photographs on, say, the iPad mailing list.
Furthermore, mind Bluetooth when you have no accessories with you, and
mind the GPS arrow (and the Internet downloading of map data) unless
you are actually navigating.
In contrast:
I spend most of my time at home. There I'll benefit from my wifi
network.
Else, I may be on a train. Trains here in the Netherlands are being
equipped with free wifi, so I may have wifi on (although I may be
better off using 3G, trading data plan usage against battery life).
But being neither on a train nor at home, I may have no "friendly"
wifi around, and I'd better not even try to find it in the middle of
nowhere or in municipal areas with numerous "unfriendly" wifi
networks.
Bottom line:
As a Dutch proverb translates: "When the tide turns, relocate the
beacons."
