Sometimes a complete reboot helps this.
You could go to the rapid-switching tray and remove most of the apps to the right of the first 5-10.
If you're mainly using it for email, and if that's mostly Wifi, you could turn Airplane Mode ON, then turn Wifi back ON again. At the very least, this would help diagnose where the problem lies.
