been trying to create a tone using your directions since it seems simpler than what i posted but i'm either not doing something or doing something wrong...it ain't working.
the only IMPORT i'm seeing in iTunes is FILE : LIBRARY : IMPORT PLAYLIST. under FILE i'm also seeing ADD A FILE TO LIBRARY. when i choose either option the MP3 file shows up in the RECENTLY ADDED area of PLAYLISTS, not in the library.
right clicking on the MP3 file i do not see an option to create an AAC
version.

Import the mp3 file to iTunes. Right-click (Ctrl + Click) on the tone >
Create AAC Version.
Right click the AAC Version > View in Finder.
Rename the file extension from m4a to m4r.
Import to iTunes the m4r file. You have a ringtone!
