I've been following this thread and want to chime in. I'm from California (AT&T) grandfathered plan with my G3s iPhone updated to 5.0. Currently I'm in Mannheim Germany. I have removed my SIM card from the iPhone and have been using iMessenger to text with other iPhones. (I don't want any AT&T surprises) I have WiFi (WLAN) set up and running here in Germany. I've been able to send and receive from, USA, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. I'm Having problems reaching Spain, Korea and Brazil. Anyone have an idea why Spain, Korea and Brazil are not reachable? iPhone to iPhone (5.0). I imagine iMessenger should work where ever you are, SIM card or no SIM card.
Side note I have used Skype in Costa Rica to call California. Sim card was removed and I had WiFi at the hotel I was at. Call was good. I also used Skype from California (data plan) to call Germany. No problem.
