My first step would be to reboot the phone. Then I would force an iCloud backup Settings>Your ID>Your Device>iCloud Backup>Back Up Now. Then check to see if automatic backups resume as expected.

Does anyone have any out-of-the box thoughts about why iCloud backups might have stopped working on an iPhone? I've tried all the basic steps.... No space issues, logged in and out of iCloud etc etc

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.
