I didn't log the process we followed, but it was essentially what you suggested in your first sentence, except I don't specifically remember turning off Match on the iMac. It took well over a half hour, not sure exactly how long (I let it run while I did other stuff), to load all my songs onto the iPhone.

I think I would try turning off iTunes Match on both devices & doing a sync after choosing the option to sync all music. If you're not confident, keep in mind that you are entitled to call Apple Support for free with your new phone.

After buying a new iPhone 6 and doing a restore from the backup of my iPhone 5, I find all the music listed on the new phone shows as being in the Cloud. Attempting to play the music anywhere out of wi-fi range requires downloading the files as cell data, which would mean a rather large transfer of data for over 2,200 songs. How can I get all the actual music files onto my phone in a bulk process?

I'm afraid that if I just do a sync with my iMac I may end up with the Mac files also being only in the Cloud.
