I had simply overlooked the card slot on the back of my iMac. I never look back there since I have a USB hub and all of the other ports are full.

Sounds like the card reader on the iMac solves your dilemma;  but I might add my own experience a while back with the Apple Connection Kit.  If you buy a new card with a large capacity (>that 32 I think)  you have to reformat it FAT for the iPad.  I believe I used the disc utility to reformat the card and then the kit worked.

This is a help if you are on a long trip and away from your desktop.
