I agree: it's ridiculous. The SIM-free (unlocked) price is the real price. If you pay a small down-payment with a contract you pay the rest over the rest of the term and you must cost it over that term, typically 2 years.

PS I wonder how many people actually use all (or even most of) the minutes, texts, and MB they pay for every month on a contract.

The REAL prices are $649, $699, $799 or numbers in that range...
If you actually get out of the door with one of the "lower prices", you have paid a small part of the price, but the carrier has paid the rest of it, and they are going to take it back from you month by month...
But buyers keep saying that they bought for the lower subsidized prices... kind of like saying "I bought a new Chevrolet for five hundred dollars", but not mentioning the five year installment payment contract...
