Sadly, it appears you can swap out the solid-state drive (SSD) on some MacBook Air models, but you cannot upgrade the RAM. The distinction between the two may have led to some of the different answers you received.
To be certain, you'll need to provide the exact model MacBook Air. There have been a few generations already.

OWC sells RAM upgrades, and they have a quick way to narrow down the options based on your Mac.

iFixIt provides complete instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble your Mac, letting you know how easy or difficult it will be. So if it's even remotely possible, they will know (and warn you accordingly).

In the variations I've skimmed over so far, however, no mention of RAM upgrades.
