Had this happen to my 4s and it was due to just splattering water on my shirt while on a motorcycle trip to cool off with the iPhone in my shirt pocket. The water got into the speaker socket. Apple Store guy caught it and when I told him about what happened he gave me a new iPhone. I'm a very good Apple customer and that probably helped.
