If your talking a standard 100-120v receptacle in the USA then the polarity is a non issue. Something may have gone wrong with the charging sequence. Sometimes stuff just happens.
It was not dangerously low on charge was it? I have a old 3G phone and if it gets low enough to shut down, it takes forever to charge but the little lightening bolt appears on the screen.
Don't use it much anymore, but can't seem to toss it.
