Hi Sue,

Put the old version back in the file, iTunes>iTunes Media> Mobile Applications.
Double click on the restored app. iTunes will report that it has a newer version--do you want to replace it?
Say , "Yes" and then sync your device.

At least that's how I do it. Useful when a developer decides to incorporate ads or other unwanted amenities like the ones you are dealing with.
