I have played around with it a bit tonight, not great. There is no hardware acceleration which is an issue for third party players. This is a summary from a forum that I agree with after testing
OK I've tested this on iPod Touch 5th Gen (Which is virtually equivalent spec to an iPhone 4S and slightly slower than an iPad 3)
1.4GB SD avi: Plays Fine
4GB 720p MP4: "Device too slow" error message. Lots of stuttering
1.9GB 1080p MP4: "Device too slow" error message. Lots of stuttering (Plays fine on iOS player)
2.9GB 720p MKV: Plays fine
4.7GB 720p MKV: Plays. Just. Dropped frames and stuttering
14GB 1080p MKV File: "Device too slow" error message. Lots of stuttering

So, it looks like you'll need the iPhone 5/iPad 4 and above to play anything 720p upwards unless you re-encode at a lower bitrate or to MP4 and send it to the iOS player. If anyone has those devices it would be good to see how you got along.

I have an iPhone 5 and an iPad 3. iPhone 5 was better due to higher spec, but the iPad3 has dual CPU and tri or quad GPU, which is of no use as its not being used fully.

My conclusion is conversion to MP4 where hardware acceleration is used due to them being iOS supported formats.
