What consensus? I think there is still on going debate on this. Personally, I think the slight majority is not to use a screen protector, and that the screen is fairly scratch resistant. I don't use a screen protector on my 4S, and I have no scratches, even after working on a remote heavy construction site.
While the BookBook case is cute, it might be better for dropping into a purse if it were more like a Moleskin journal with an elastic to keep it closed. If you are concerned with scratching, then maybe a sleeve type case might be better. Or just putting the current BookBook case into a dedicated pocket in your purse.
